📚 Complete Guide

What You Can Track

Standard Measurements (Built-In)

Height (cm or inches)

How to Measure:

  • Measure from soil level to tallest point
  • Use straight line (not following curves)
  • Extend leaves gently (don't force)

Best For:

  • Upright plants (Monstera, Fiddle Leaf Fig, Snake Plant)
  • Trees and palms
  • Tall cacti

Tips:

  • Mark measuring point on pot (consistent reference)
  • If plant leans, measure to natural top (not forced upright)
  • For multi-stem plants, measure tallest stem

Width (cm or inches)

How to Measure:

  • Measure widest spread of foliage
  • From tip to tip of outermost leaves
  • Measure in widest direction

Best For:

  • Spreading plants (Pothos, Philodendron)
  • Bushes and rosettes (succulents, ferns)
  • Vining plants trained horizontally

Tips:

  • If asymmetrical, measure longest dimension
  • Don't include drooping or dead leaves
  • For trained plants, measure along support structure

Leaf Count

How to Count:

  • Count all visible leaves
  • Include small new leaves (unfurled)
  • Exclude dead or dying leaves (brown, crispy)

Best For:

  • Small plants (10-50 leaves)
  • Collectible varieties (Calathea, Prayer Plants)
  • Slow growers where leaf count matters (orchids)

Tips:

  • Take photo while counting (verify later)
  • Mark leaves with stickers if losing count
  • For 50+ leaves, estimate or count every 10th leaf

Additional Metrics (Optional)

Stem Count:

  • Number of main stems from soil
  • Tracks branching and bushing
  • Useful for: Multi-stem plants, propagation success

Pot Size (diameter in cm or inches):

  • Current pot size
  • Tracks repotting history
  • Correlates growth with container size

Flower/Fruit Count:

  • Number of blooms or fruits
  • Tracks reproductive success
  • Seasonal patterns for blooming plants

Custom Measurements:

  • Define your own metrics
  • Examples: Trunk girth, longest leaf length, vine length
  • Species-specific features (e.g., "Number of pitchers" for carnivorous plants)

Measurement Best Practices

Consistency is Key

The #1 Rule: Consistent technique beats perfect precision.

Why Consistency Matters:

  • Comparing 44cm → 46cm (reliable if measured same way)
  • Comparing 44cm (floor to tip) → 46cm (pot rim to tip) = Unreliable!

Do's ✅

Timing:

  • ✅ Measure same time of day (morning is best)
  • ✅ After watering (leaves fully extended, consistent weight)
  • ✅ Same day each month (e.g., 1st of month, easy to remember)

Technique:

  • ✅ Use same measuring points every time
  • ✅ Mark reference point on pot (tape, sticker) for height
  • ✅ Same angle for photos (front view, same distance)
  • ✅ Include scale reference in photos (ruler, common object)
  • ✅ Use same units always (don't switch cm ↔ inches)

Recording:

  • ✅ Add photo every time (invaluable for comparison)
  • ✅ Note anything unusual (pruned, repotted, stressed)
  • ✅ Record immediately (don't trust memory!)

Don'ts ❌

Technique Errors:

  • ❌ Don't switch measuring spots (inconsistent data)
  • ❌ Don't measure when wilted (soil dry, leaves drooping)
  • ❌ Don't force leaves to extend (measure natural state)
  • ❌ Don't estimate (always measure, don't guess)

Timing Mistakes:

  • ❌ Don't rush measurements (take your time)
  • ❌ Don't measure different times (morning vs evening = different results)
  • ❌ Don't skip months without noting why (breaks trend line)

Recording Errors:

  • ❌ Don't backdate measurements you forgot (better to skip than fake data)
  • ❌ Don't change units mid-tracking (cm → inches = confusion)

Tools You'll Need

Essential:

  • Tape measure or ruler - Flexible tape for height/width
  • Camera (phone works great!) - Progress photos

Helpful:

  • Plant markers - Mark measuring points
  • Notebook - Quick notes (then transfer to PlantKeeper)
  • Scale reference - Ruler or coin in photos for size context

Advanced:

  • Calipers - Precise small measurements (stem thickness)
  • Light meter app - Track light conditions
  • Thermometer/hygrometer - Environmental data

Measurement Frequency

Recommended Schedules by Plant Type

Fast Growers (Pothos, Monstera, Spider Plant, Tradescantia):

  • Record: Bi-weekly or monthly
  • Why: Visible changes every 2-4 weeks
  • Focus: New leaf production, vine length
  • Seasonal: More frequent in spring/summer

Moderate Growers (Snake Plant, ZZ Plant, most succulents):

  • Record: Monthly or bi-monthly
  • Why: Slower changes, monthly shows trends
  • Focus: Height increase, new leaves
  • Seasonal: Reduce to quarterly in winter dormancy

Slow Growers (Most cacti, some succulents, Lithops):

  • Record: Quarterly or bi-annually
  • Why: Very subtle changes month-to-month
  • Focus: Any change is notable!
  • Tip: Annual photos often sufficient

Seasonal Plants (Annuals, deciduous plants):

  • Record: Weekly during active growth (spring/summer)
  • Record: Monthly or not at all during dormancy (fall/winter)
  • Focus: Mark seasonal transitions (first leaf, dormancy start)

Life Stage Adjustments

Seedlings/Propagations:

  • Record: Weekly (rapid early growth)
  • Track: Survival, first leaves, root development

Juvenile Plants:

  • Record: Bi-weekly to monthly (establishing phase)
  • Track: Steady growth, health stabilization

Mature Plants:

  • Record: Monthly to quarterly (slower growth)
  • Track: Maintenance, seasonal patterns

Senior Plants (5+ years):

  • Record: Quarterly to annually (minimal growth)
  • Track: Health maintenance, not aggressive growth

Setting Up Reminders

Automate Your Schedule:

  1. Create Measurement Reminder:

    • Reminders → "+ New Reminder"
    • Type: "Measure Growth" 📏
    • Frequency: Based on plant type (see above)
    • Notification: Medium priority 🟡
  2. Batch Reminder for All Plants:

    • Select all plants (or by collection)
    • Bulk create: "Monthly Growth Tracking"
    • Same day each month (e.g., 1st)
    • Benefit: Track entire collection consistently

Reminder Tip: Include "Take photo!" in reminder description

Special Situations

After Repotting

What Changes:

  • Height may decrease (plant settled lower)
  • Width may decrease (foliage compacted during repotting)

What to Do:

  • Record immediately after repotting
  • Note in record: "Just repotted - measurements reset"
  • Expect growth spurt in following weeks (record more frequently)

After Pruning

What Changes:

  • Height/width reduced intentionally
  • Leaf count decreased

What to Do:

  • Record before pruning (baseline)
  • Record after pruning (immediate)
  • Note amount removed: "Pruned 20cm", "Removed 5 leaves"
  • Track regrowth in following months

Recovery from Stress

After Pest Damage, Underwatering, etc.:

Record More Frequently:

  • Weekly during recovery phase
  • Track progress back to health
  • Document interventions (treatment applied)

What to Track:

  • Leaf count (may decrease initially, then recover)
  • New growth (sign of recovery)
  • Overall health improvement

💡 Tips & Tricks

Morning Measurement Ritual

Best Practice Routine:

  1. Water plants (day before measurement day)
  2. Next morning: Plants perked up, leaves extended
  3. Measure + photograph entire collection
  4. Record immediately (don't delay!)

Time: 5-10 min per plant
Benefit: Consistent, reliable data

Use Photo as Backup

If You Forget to Measure:

  • Take photo on schedule even if too busy to measure
  • Later: Estimate measurements from photo using scale reference
  • Note: "Estimated from photo" in record

Better than: Skipping record entirely!

Mark Measuring Points

For Consistent Height:

  • Small sticker on pot rim where you measure from
  • Or mark spot on wall behind plant
  • Ensures exact same reference point every time

For Consistent Width:

  • Note which direction you measure (e.g., "East-West spread")
  • If asymmetrical, always measure longest dimension

Batch Measuring Day

For Large Collections:

  • Designate one day per month (e.g., "First Saturday")
  • Prepare: Gather tools (tape measure, camera, notes)
  • Work methodically: Room by room, or by collection
  • Celebrate: Track entire collection = major accomplishment!

❓ Common Questions

Q: What if I miss a month?

A: No problem! Just record next month. Gaps are okay, trends still visible. Add note: "Skipped June - vacation"

Q: My plant shrunk! Is my data wrong?

A: Possible reasons:

  • Pruning (intentional) - Note this in record
  • Repotting (settled lower) - Normal, note it
  • Measurement error - Re-measure to verify
  • Actual shrinkage (serious) - Plant dying leaves, wilting → Needs urgent care!

Q: Do I have to measure height AND width?

A: No! Track what matters for your plant:

  • Upright plants → Height only is fine
  • Spreading plants → Width only works
  • Leafy plants → Leaf count might be enough

Choose 1-2 metrics, be consistent.

Q: Can I edit measurements if I made a mistake?

A: Yes! Growth records are editable:

  1. Growth Tracking tab → Records Table
  2. Find record → Click "Edit"
  3. Correct measurements
  4. Note: "Corrected typo" in notes section

Q: Should I measure every plant the same way?

A: Adapt technique to plant type:

  • Tall plants: Height focus
  • Bushy plants: Width focus
  • Small plants: Leaf count focus

But within each plant, always measure the same way!
